Soup on one side. Your sandwich on the other. One handle to carry the lot.

Rhoda Hebblethwaite has been at the potter’s wheel for 49 years. When her husband Cyril’s hands started to shake and he quietly gave up on soup, she made him a bowl he could carry with one hand. This is that bowl, from her very last big firing. Her shoulder won’t allow another.

attempts to get the handle right

“Everyone thinks the handle is the pretty bit. It isn’t. The handle is where you tell the weight to go.”

— Rhoda Hebblethwaite

What arrives at your door

  • One handmade ceramic soup and sandwich bowl in the glaze you choose
  • Wrapped by hand in brown paper by Rhoda and her daughter Bethan
  • A short card from the byre

What makes Rhoda’s bowl different

No. 01

One piece, one hand

A deep cup and a curved plate made as one dish. Nothing slides against anything else on the way to the table or the armchair.

No. 02

The handle sits where the weight is

A wide, flat loop right beside the soup, big enough for a thumb and two fingers. The bowl hangs level instead of tipping towards your wrist.

No. 03

A wall between soup and bread

The cup’s high wall keeps the soup on its own side. Toasties stay crisp, crusty bread stays dry.

No. 04

Steady wherever you eat

A wide, flat base that sits still on a lap tray, a tray table or a side table.

No. 05

Microwave and dishwasher safe

Warm the soup right in the cup, eat, and pop the whole thing in the dishwasher. One dish to wash up instead of two.

No. 06

Real ceramic, made by hand

Thrown on the wheel, kiln-fired and dipped in glaze by hand. Proper weight in your hand, and no two bowls exactly alike.

Pick your glaze

Wensleydale Cream

A warm, speckled white with a toasted rim.

Pillar-Box Red

The bright red of the post box on Masham’s Market Place.

River Ure Blue

Deep and glossy, with a pale speckled rim.

Buttercup Yellow

Warm and sunny, the colour of the hay meadows in June.

How to use it

  1. Fill the cup with soup, stew or broth, a finger’s width below the rim. Warm it right in the microwave if you like.
  2. Load the plate with half a sandwich, a cheese toastie, crackers or a slice of crusty bread.
  3. Thumb through the handle, fingers underneath, and carry it close. Your other hand stays free.
  4. When you’ve finished, it all goes in the dishwasher together.

Made by hand in Masham

Rhoda throws every cup, shapes every plate and pulls every handle in the old stone byre behind her cottage in Masham, North Yorkshire. Before a bowl is wrapped, she lifts it once by the handle. If it doesn’t hang level, it goes on the seconds shelf. Her shoulder won’t allow another big firing, so what’s left from September is her last, on sale until 30 November while it lasts.

Rhoda’s standard

  • Thrown, shaped and glazed by hand
  • Every bowl lifted by the handle before it’s dispatched
  • Microwave and dishwasher safe
  • Wrapped by hand, dispatched by Royal Mail within 1–2 working days
  • 90-day money-back guarantee

90-day money-back guarantee

“If it doesn’t make lunch easier in your house, I want to hear about it, and I want you to have your money back.” Use it every day for 90 days. If it isn’t right for you, email us for a full refund. No questions asked.

Care and handling: Microwave and dishwasher safe. Hot soup still makes a hot bowl, so carry it by the handle and fill the cup a finger’s width below the rim. Because every piece is glazed by hand, colour and speckling vary slightly from bowl to bowl. This is a serving dish, not a medical or assistive device.

The September Firing

A note from the byre:

Rhoda Hebblethwaite has been at the potter’s wheel in Masham, North Yorkshire, for 49 years. When her husband Cyril’s hands started to shake and he quietly stopped having soup so he wouldn’t spill it, she made him one dish he could carry with one hand: a deep cup for the soup, a curved plate for the sandwich, and a wide, flat handle set right where the weight is. Since May the bowls have sold at her stall on the Saturday market in Masham. Her shoulder won’t allow another big firing, so the bowls left from September are her last. On sale until 30 November, while they last.

What people say about Rhoda’s soup bowls

Customer selfie with the Wensleydale Cream soup and sandwich bowl

Bought the cream one for myself after my sister showed me hers. Soup on one side, a few crackers on the other, and I carry it through to my chair with one hand. Heavy in the good way, proper pottery. Wish I had found it years ago.

Sandra K., Northallerton, North Yorkshire

Pillar-Box Red soup bowl with tomato soup and toastie on a lap tray

My hands aren't steady any more, so the wife used to carry my lunch through for me. Too proud for that. Now I carry this one myself every day at twelve. Not a drop on the carpet since it came. The red is even nicer in person.

Derek H., York

Customer selfie with the River Ure Blue soup and sandwich bowl

I got two in the blue, one for me and one for my neighbour. We have soup and half a sandwich together on Thursdays and nobody has to juggle plates. Goes straight in the dishwasher after, which matters to me.

Verified

Jean M., Kendal, Cumbria

River Ure Blue soup bowl lifted by its handle next to a microwave

Bought it for my dad, who is 84 and lives on his own. He heats his soup right in it in the microwave and carries it to the table himself. That alone was worth it for our family.

Graham T., Lincoln

Customer selfie with the Buttercup Yellow soup and sandwich bowl

My toastie stays crisp on its side because the soup stays in the cup. Sounds like nothing until you have eaten soggy bread for years. The wife has claimed the yellow one, so I have ordered a second.

Trevor B., Skipton, North Yorkshire

Buttercup Yellow soup bowl just unpacked from brown paper

Came wrapped in brown paper with a little card from the byre and arrived quicker than I expected. Lovely and solid. Ordered two more as Christmas presents for my sisters before they sell out.

How is it made?

Rhoda throws each cup on the wheel herself, shapes the curved plate and joins the two while the clay is still soft. Then she pulls the handle and sets it right beside the soup, so the bowl hangs level when you carry it. After the first firing she dips each bowl in one of four glazes and fires it again. Before it is wrapped, Rhoda lifts every bowl once by the handle. No two are identical. Microwave and dishwasher safe.
