“For 23 Christmases my baubles never left the Black Country. I only ever sold them at our church Christmas fair and from my front door. This is the first time anyone further afield can have one – and the last time I’ll ever make them.”

– Rowena Tolley, 71, Wordsley, West Midlands

The four designs

The same four scenes Rowena has painted for 23 years. Each one has its own glowing heart.

Father Christmas

Father Christmas in his red suit holds a present that glows gold in his hands, beside a lit tree, a candy cane and a little lantern with its wreath.

Angel

A golden-haired angel with spread wings and a halo holds a shining star to her heart, between a decorated tree and a lantern.

Train

A red-and-green steam train with a glowing headlight and lit windows curves through the snow, its carriage loaded with presents.

Snowman

A sparkling snowman in a top hat and long red scarf stands by a picket fence, a lit tree and a little glowing lantern.

What makes Rowena’s baubles different

No. 01

A real scene, not a picture

Inside is a three-dimensional little world – figure, tree, lantern, presents and pine cones – that you can look at from every side.

No. 02

Painted by a glass painter

Rowena spent 31 years painting crystal by hand in a glassworks decorating shop. Father Christmas’s beard alone takes her forty minutes.

No. 03

Set in like a ship in a bottle

The scene goes in piece by piece with long tweezers and bent wires – the way her father built his ships in bottles.

No. 04

It glows from inside

A small warm light in the crown makes the present, the star, the train windows and the snow shine softly in the dark.

No. 05

No flex, no socket

The light runs on a pre-installed button-cell battery, so you can hang it anywhere: on the tree, in a window, from the mantelpiece.

No. 06

The size of an orange

10 cm across and 12 cm tall with its crown – big enough to be the star of the tree, small enough for a tabletop tree.

How to hang it

1

Unwrap it. Lift the bauble out of its tissue paper by the gold crown, not by the glass.

2

Flip the switch. The button-cell battery is already inside – one flick of the small switch and the scene starts to glow.

3

Hang it up. On a sturdy branch near the trunk, in a window, on a wreath or from the mantelpiece – and switch off the big light for a moment.

Made by hand in Wordsley

Rowena Tolley grew up by the Stourbridge Canal. Her father worked the narrowboats, built ships in bottles and taught her, at nine, how a whole ship gets through a narrow neck: long tweezers, bent wires and patience.

At 25 she started in the decorating shop of a crystal works in Brierley Hill and painted glass by hand for 31 years. In 2003 she made her first bauble as a night light for her baby granddaughter, Megan – a little Father Christmas inside a glass ball, with a warm light she fitted into the crown herself. Since then she has made more than 2,000, sold only at her church Christmas fair.

She has always done every step on her own: modelling, painting, setting the scene, fitting the light. Now, at 71, her hands have started to tell her it’s time. On 30 November, Rowena puts down her brush for good. These last 412 baubles are the final ones she will ever make.

Questions people ask at the Christmas fair

How did Santa get in there?
Very carefully. Every figure is painted first, then the scene is set in piece by piece through the neck of the bauble with long tweezers.

Does it really light up?
Yes. A warm little light sits in the gold crown and runs on a button-cell battery that is already fitted. Just flip the small switch. No flex and no socket needed.

Can I order different designs?
Yes. Pick 2, 3 or 4 baubles and choose a design for each one – many people take all four.

How quickly is it sent?
Every order is dispatched within 1–2 working days, carefully packed in tissue paper.

Can I hang it outside?
It is made for indoors: on the tree, in a window, on a wreath by the fire or from the mantelpiece.

Rowena’s promise

90-day money-back guarantee

Hang it, switch it on and watch it glow. If it doesn’t win your heart, send it back within 90 days and you’ll get your money back – no questions asked.

Dispatched within 1–2 working days · Only 412 left · Special price until 30 November

Care & use

Dust the glass with a soft, dry cloth. Hang it on a sturdy branch, close to the trunk, so it can’t swing against other baubles. Keep it indoors and away from open flames and heaters. It is a glass bauble, not a toy – please hang it out of reach of small children and pets. After Christmas, wrap it in its tissue paper and store it in its box until next December.

The Final Series

A message from Rowena:

For 23 Christmases I painted these baubles in the little painting room at the back of my house in Wordsley – every figure modelled, painted and set into the glass with my own two hands – and sold them only at our church Christmas fair. Those hands are 71 now, and they’ve started telling me it’s time. On 30 November, I put down my brush for good. These 412 baubles are the last I will ever make.

Every scene was modelled and painted by hand and set into the glass piece by piece. They will keep going out in the post after 30 November, until the very last one is gone.

When they're gone, they're gone.

What Rowena's customers are saying

I took a photo of it the first night it was on the tree. I flicked the little switch, turned the lamps off and the whole Father Christmas scene lit up inside the glass. My daughter said it looks like a tiny Christmas village in a bubble.

The angel hangs right at the front of our tree and it's the first thing the grandchildren run to. The light is warm and soft, not that harsh blue you get with cheap fairy lights. You can see her little wings from every side.

Bought the train for myself after a hard year and I don't regret it one bit. In the evening I switch the big light off and just leave the tree and that little train glowing. It makes the whole front room feel like Christmas.

We hung the snowman in our bay window and people actually slow down on the pavement to look at it. It's real glass and it feels solid, not like the plastic ones from the big shops.

I ordered all four, one for each of my grandchildren. Every one of them is different and so detailed inside. They arrived wrapped in tissue paper, every single one perfect.

My wife made me have my photo taken with it, so here I am. I was the one who picked the train because I had one as a boy. It sits on the tree right at eye level and I check on it every evening.
