Five Things A Machine Cannot Do In Twenty Minutes
A full four-inch brim. That extra inch and a half over a standard brim is the difference between shade on a face and shade on ears, neck and shoulders.
Center crease with two side dents, set over live steam on a wooden block. A crease pressed cold falls out. One set with heat stays put.
Six brass grommets set high on the crown where heat collects. Air moves through instead of sitting on your head.
Cast longhorn buckle at the front, brass concho at the side, and the band stitched the full circumference. Glued bands lift by August.

Each hat is shaped by hand over steam, so no two crowns are identical and the grommets are not perfectly evenly spaced. Full-grain leather also carries its own natural markings. These are not flaws — they are the difference between a hat somebody made and a hat a machine stamped.

Kessler Hat Co. has been open in Fredericksburg, Texas since 1946 — Otto, then Walt, then Roy, who has stood at the block since 1979. It is closing this season, and not because business went bad. A side of leather that cost eighty-four dollars in 2019 now costs two hundred and eleven, and a hat still takes two hours and forty minutes to build, exactly as it did forty-seven years ago.
Seventy-one brown and forty-seven black came out of the final delivery of hide. There is no more leather in the building and no restock coming. The shop closes the day the rack is empty.

Each hat is cut from genuine full-grain leather with a round head knife, shaped over live steam on a wooden block and held by hand until the crease sets. The brim edge is turned and stitched, the band is stitched its full circumference rather than glued, and the six brass grommets are punched and set one at a time. Two hours and forty minutes per hat, in a 420-square-foot workshop in Fredericksburg, Texas.
