Blown by Hand in the Stillaguamish Valley

Roy Henley, 69, has spent 32 years at the furnace in an old dairy barn outside Stanwood, Washington. He made his first two feeders for his wife Marge in the snow of 1996, and he still blows every one himself.

🔥 Blown by hand Stanwood, Washington

There's nothing blooming in December. Nothing red for a mile. That feeder is the only flower he's going to see, so it had better be worth looking at.

Why It Matters Now

1
Hummingbirds don't all leave in fall

Anna's hummingbirds stay all winter from California to British Columbia, and rufous hummingbirds winter across the Gulf states. Leaving a feeder up doesn't stop migration . It gives late travelers a place to refuel.

2
The brightest thing in a gray yard

With almost nothing in bloom in winter, the color in the glass is what draws them in . They find food by sight first.

3
A place to sit on cold mornings

Perch bars between the ports let a bird drink without hovering after a long night that burned through its energy.

4
Right outside your kitchen window

It hangs at eye level on its own S-hook, so the first thing you see in the morning can be a hummingbird in the snow .

What Makes It Different

🔥 Hand-blown No Two Alike

Each reservoir is gathered on a blowpipe and shaped freehand, not pressed in a mold . Any swirl that turns out muddy goes back into the furnace.

🎨 Color In the Glass, Not on It

Crushed colored glass is rolled in at the furnace, so the color can't fade, wash off or peel . No red dye needed in the nectar.

🌸 Ports Four Flowers, Room to Sit

Four red flower-shaped ports with perch bars between them, so more than one bird can feed at once.

🧼 Easy care Glass Scrubs Truly Clean

No clouding, no scratches for mold to hide in. The base comes off for a quick brush and rinse.

❄️ Winter Made for the Dawn Swap

Nectar starts to freeze around 27°F. Roy's trick since 1996: two feeders , one warming inside, swapped at first light.

📦 Limited Only What One Furnace Makes

Roy fires his furnace twice a year. 212 are left from the October firing, packed and shipped by his granddaughter Wren.

What Arrives at Your Door

1 The Glass One hand-blown reservoir, color rolled into the glass
2 The Base 4 red flower ports with perch bars, comes apart to clean
3 The S-Hook Black steel, about 5 in long, ready to hang

Ready in Five Minutes

Step 1 Fill

Mix 1 part white sugar to 4 parts water , let it cool and fill the glass. No dye, no honey.

Step 2 Hang

Hook it under a porch eave or on a shepherd's hook, sunny and out of the wind , where you can see it.

Step 3 Refresh

Rinse and refill every 3–4 days in winter , more often when it's warm.

"Most people still take their feeders down after Labor Day so the birds will 'know to leave.' Migration doesn't work that way. It runs on day length. What has changed is who stays: Anna's hummingbirds year-round up the Pacific coast, rufous hummingbirds across the Gulf states. In winter a feeder has two jobs : be thawed at first light, and be clean."

Three Blends, One Furnace

Maple Red Amber, red and gold
Blue Swirl Blue and turquoise
Mosaic Turquoise with color flecks

Quality You Can Check Yourself

  • Real hand-blown glass: hold it to the light and the swirl runs through the glass, not across it.
  • No two alike: set two side by side and the pattern is different on each.
  • Color that can't fade: nothing is painted or printed on the glass.
  • Every surface reachable: base off, bottle brush in, done.

The Spring-Return Guarantee

Hang it this winter. Not happy by the time the rufous hummingbirds come back in spring? Full refund. Arrives cracked or chipped? We send a new one.

Good to Know

Will leaving it up stop hummingbirds from migrating?

No. Migration is triggered by day length, not food. A feeder left up simply helps late travelers refuel.

How long should I leave it up?

All winter on the Pacific coast and across the South. Farther north and east, until two weeks after the last bird you see, then bring it in before the hard freezes.

Can the glass crack in a freeze?

Any feeder can crack if the nectar freezes solid. A 4:1 mix starts to freeze around 27°F, so bring it in on nights well below freezing, or keep a second one warm inside and swap at first light.

What about ants and bees?

In cold months they're barely a factor. In summer, keep it clean and drip-free. If ants find it, hang a small ant moat between the hook and the feeder.

How fast does it ship?

Every order ships within 2–4 business days from Washington, U.S. only, wrapped by hand.

Roy's winter card
  • Nectar: 1 part white sugar to 4 parts water. No honey, no red dye.
  • Where: sunny, out of the wind, where you can see it from a window.
  • Cleaning: hot water and a bottle brush at every refill; a vinegar soak (1:4) once a month.
  • Coldest nights: a short string of old-fashioned incandescent lights above the feeder helps keep it thawed.
  • Handmade: swirl, color and small bubbles vary on every piece.

The Final Sale

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

800+ Happy Customers

Excellent 4.9

What Roy's customers are saying

Ordered Roy's feeder after reading about the dawn swap, mostly out of curiosity. The blue in the glass is even prettier in person, especially on a gray morning when nothing else in the yard has any color. Hung it in the drizzle the day it arrived, and our Anna's was on it by lunch. He hasn't missed a morning since. So glad I didn't wait.

I've been burned by "handmade" online before, so I almost scrolled past. Glad I didn't. You can see the swirl actually runs through the glass, it's not painted on, and the weight of it tells you it's real. Arrived in three days, wrapped like it was going to my grandmother. It hangs right outside my kitchen window and I catch myself staring at it while I do the dishes.

Honestly bought it more for how it would look on the porch than anything else. Wasn't expecting a hummingbird in the middle of October, let alone two of them taking turns on the perches. Took me two minutes to hang, the hook was already in the box. Every plastic feeder I've owned faded to pink by August. This one looks better than the day I hung it.

Wasn't expecting to care this much about a bird feeder until I held it up to the evening sun. Every fleck of color lights up like stained glass, and no two spots on it look the same. You can tell somebody actually made this by hand. The base comes off in seconds, so cleaning it is a quick rinse and a brush. Already ordered a second one for the swap.

Opened the box this morning and just sat there with my coffee for a minute. Packed in so much paper there was no chance of it breaking, and it showed up four days after I ordered. The color is deeper than any photo can show, more like a sunset than anything in a store. Filled it, hung it out back, and by the afternoon I had my first visitor.

My daughter sent me this for my birthday and I haven't stopped smiling since. The blue swirls are just gorgeous against the mountains behind our deck. I had a little ruby-throat come by three days in a row, the latest I've ever seen one up here. My neighbors keep asking where I got it. I tell them it's from a man in Washington who blows every one himself.
