Six things that make it different
The grip gets shaped to the base of the hand first. The animal is carved around that shape afterwards. Each one is really a different way of spreading the weight.
The handle sits at a slight angle to the shaft, not straight across. That puts the weight on the base of the hand and the forearm instead of the wrist.
The weight sits high, about a foot below the handle, so the cane swings forward on its own instead of being lifted on every step.
Handle and shaft are one piece of wood, not two stuck together. On most decorative canes the weak point is exactly where the handle is glued on.
Oil worked in by hand over three days instead of sprayed-on varnish. Varnish turns slippery when your hand is damp. Oiled wood grips back.
A thick rubber tip on solid wood instead of a thin cap on a hollow tube. Solid wood does not clack down a tiled hallway.

After forty-one years and a little over six thousand canes, arthritis in both thumbs has ended Roy Dettmer’s fine carving. His son is an electrician in Roanoke, so there is nobody to hand the chisels to. What is left is 214 finished canes standing in racks along the back wall of a small workshop in Grayson County, Virginia. Every one is already carved, oiled and finished. When they are gone, there is no next batch.

Every cane arrives at 36–37 inches so it can be cut down to the person rather than adjusted with a pin. Stand up straight, let the arm hang loose, and the top of the grip should meet the wrist bone. Mark that spot and take the difference off the bottom.
A pipe cutter does it in under a minute. The shaft is solid wood all the way through, so there is nothing inside to hit. Slide the rubber tip back on and it is finished.

Each cane is carved by hand from one solid piece of hardwood — handle and shaft together, never glued. Rough-shaped with a mallet and chisel, then detailed with a blade no wider than a matchstick, then oiled by hand over three days. No two are identical.
