Made by hand in Burslem

Burslem, the mother town of the Potteries, has lived off its kilns for more than three hundred years. Royston Sherratt has worked at one of them since he was eighteen. When his granddaughter Tamsin showed him that most teabags and paper coffee filters contain plastic, he remembered the ceramic filter candles his grandfather fired for household water filters, and spent two winters and more than 300 firings making one for a mug of tea.

Every filter in this last run was pressed by hand, fired in his kiln and tested with a cup of tea before it went in the box. Arthritis has taken his hands, and the studio closes on 30 November. These are the last 167 sets.

Royston Sherratt

What arrives at your door

  • 2 porous ceramic filters, charcoal grey, unglazed
  • Each 8.5 cm across and 5.3 cm tall
  • Ready to use after a rinse with hot water

Why it’s different

NO. 01

The ceramic is the filter

No bag, no paper inside, no metal mesh, no plastic ring. The fired ceramic walls hold back the leaves on their own.

NO. 02

No plastic in boiling water

Many teabags and paper coffee filters contain plastic. Here, water just off the boil touches ceramic and tea, nothing else.

NO. 03

A clean cup, no bits

The pores are far smaller than the smallest flake of tea. What reaches your mug is tea, not the dust metal infusers leave behind.

NO. 04

Nothing to buy again

No more boxes of teabags, no running out on a Sunday morning, nothing in the bin after every cup.

NO. 05

Tea and coffee

Use one filter for loose tea and the other for ground coffee, so neither picks up the taste of the other.

NO. 06

Made for one proper cuppa

Small enough to sit right on top of your mug. One cup, made the way you like it, and no more faff than a teabag.

How to use it

1

Rinse and set it on your mug. A quick rinse with hot water, then sit the filter on top of any standard mug.

2

Add tea or coffee. A heaped teaspoon of loose tea, or about two tablespoons of medium-coarse ground coffee.

3

Pour slowly. Water just off the boil, in two or three goes. Your cup is ready in three or four minutes. Add milk if you take it.

4

Tap and rinse. Tap the leaves or grounds into the food caddy or compost and rinse the filter under the hot tap. No washing-up liquid.

From someone who sells tea for a living

“I’ve tried every infuser going. I expected bits from this one and got a clean cup. No dust, no metal taste, no papery taste. I kept one by my own kettle.”

Good to know before you order

  • One cup at a time. It makes 250 to 350 ml. It is not made for a full pot.
  • Loose tea or medium-coarse coffee. Very fine coffee, like espresso grind, slows the filter down.
  • It fits most standard mugs. On a very wide mug, the bottom of the filter dips a little into the cup.
  • It is fired ceramic. Treat it like your best mug. A fall onto a tiled floor can break it.
  • The colour is natural. Every filter is the same deep charcoal grey from the firing, with a fine, stone-like surface.

Care

Rinse under the hot tap after every cup and let it air dry. Never use washing-up liquid or the dishwasher, because ceramic soaks up detergent. Every couple of weeks, boil the filter for ten minutes in a pan of water with a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda. That keeps the pores open and the filter quick for years. If it ever slows down, boil it again.

90-day money-back guarantee

Try it every morning for three months. If it isn’t for you, email info@cedarandtinco.com and send it back for a full refund. Every order is dispatched within 1–2 days.

The Final Sale

A message from Royston:

After 58 years at the wheel in Burslem, Sherratt Pottery closes on 30 November. These are the last filters I’ll ever send out. Every one was pressed by hand, fired in my own kiln and tested with a cup of tea before it went in the box. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced.

I’m proud of every single one. I hope they give you a better cuppa for years.

When they’re gone, they’re gone — and so is the studio.

What Royston's customers are saying

Customer photo: ceramic tea filter on a white mug in a living room

I was worried it would be too big for my mugs but it sits in my everyday white one like it was made for it. Only the rim shows above the top. Tea comes out clean, not a single leaf in the bottom of the cup. Lovely bit of work.

Customer photo: ceramic tea filter on a cornflower mug in a kitchen

At my age I don't want anything fiddly. You rinse it under the hot tap and leave it on the drainer, that's it. Every couple of weeks I boil it with a spoonful of bicarb like it says on the website and it runs as quick as the day it came. Wish I'd had one years ago.

Customer photo: ceramic tea filter on a sage green mug in a galley kitchen

Bought it thinking it would be a faff on a work morning. It isn't. Spoon of leaves in, kettle on, pour in two goes and it's ready by the time I've found my keys. Proper strong cuppa and nothing to fish out.

Customer photo: loose tea in the ceramic filter on a rose bone china mug

I drink a fairly broken Assam that used to sneak straight through my old metal infuser. Not with this. A heaped teaspoon, water just off the boil, and the cup is clear right to the bottom. The china mug with the roses was my mum's, so it's nice to use it properly again.

Came well wrapped in a little box with plenty of padding, both filters in one piece, and sooner than I expected. I have my brew at the kitchen window every afternoon now and watch the rain come down. Simple pleasures.

Customer photo: ceramic tea filter next to a brown teapot with a cosy

I wasn't sure about paying £45 when a box of bags is a couple of quid. But I've not bought a box since it arrived, and there are two in the set, so my husband has the other one for his coffee. The old brown pot still comes out when the family visit. The rest of the time it's this.

How are your products made?

Royston pressed every filter by hand in his brick workshop in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, let it dry and fired it unglazed in his own kiln, so the ceramic itself does the filtering. More than 300 test firings went into getting the pores right, and every filter was tested with a cup of tea before it went in the box. The last 167 sets were finished before the arthritis in his hands stopped the fine work. This is his final run.
