Royston’s Windproof Winter Gloves
Final run · last 3,700 pairs on the shelf
“If it doesn’t go on my hand, it doesn’t go in the box.” — Royston

winters on the same pattern

layers: windproof, fleece, sealed cuff
2

Made on the top floor in Yeovil
Royston Coombes has sewn winter gloves on the same floor of an old glove works on Addlewell Lane since 1983. His grandfather took the floor in 1952, in a town that was once the glove capital of Britain. This pair started with a rural postman whose wrists froze every time he reached into a letterbox — so Royston closed the cuff.
The building has been sold and the floor closes on 30 November. These are the last 3,700 pairs he will make. Whatever is left keeps being dispatched until the shelf is empty.
— Royston
“Everybody thinks cold hands means you need a thicker glove. My grandfather used to say: keep the wrist warm and the fingers take care of themselves. So we close the cuff. Windproof outside, fleece inside, and a zip that seals the wrist. That’s the whole secret, and it’s the part everybody else leaves out.”
— Royston Coombes, glove maker since 1983
What arrives at your door
- 1 pair of gloves (left and right) in the colour you choose
- A handwritten card from Kerry
- Pulled onto Royston’s own hand and checked before it is boxed
Why your hands stay warm in them
No. 01
The Storm Cuff
A zip closes the cuff snug around your wrist. No gap for the wind, and no bellows effect pumping the warm air out every time you move your hand.
No. 02
Windproof, water-repellent shell
Wind is what makes hands cold. It stops at the outer layer, and light snow and drizzle bead off.
No. 03
Brushed fleece lining
Soft on the skin, holds a layer of warm air and breathes, so your hands don’t go clammy and cold.
No. 04
Warm without the bulk
Pre-curved fingers and no stiff padding. Keys, zips, a lead clip or a car-seat buckle, without taking them off.
No. 05
Touchscreen & grip
Thumb and index finger work on your phone. The palm grips the steering wheel, the ice scraper and the lead.
No. 06
Easy on, easy off
Open the zip and the cuff opens wide, so the glove slides on even with cold, stiff fingers. Close it and it stays put.
An ordinary winter glove or Royston’s?
| Ordinary glove | Royston’s glove |
|---|---|
| Loose knit or elastic band that gaps when you reach | Zip Storm Cuff, snug around the wrist |
| Knit lets the wind straight through | Windproof softshell outer |
| Thin lining, or none at all | Brushed fleece that holds warm air |
| Thick padding and clumsy fingers | Slim, pre-curved fingers |
| Glove off to answer the phone | Touchscreen thumb and index finger |
| Smooth palm that slides on the wheel | Grip pattern across the palm |
| Off a factory line, nobody checks the fit | Pulled onto Royston’s own hand before it is boxed |
Pick your colour
Sport Black
The Sport Cut: panelled palm, extra stitching where a glove wears first, and a clip loop at the cuff.
Sky Blue
Bright and easy to spot in the snow. Grip pattern across the whole palm. Kerry’s own pair.
Rose Pink
A pink you can see from the street. Grip pattern across the whole palm. The pair the postwoman’s granddaughter walked off with.
Ask Royston — from the cutting table
“Will they fit me?”
They’re one size and they fit most adult hands, wrists from about 18 to 24 centimetres. The zip pulls the cuff in to yours. If your hands are very small, the fingertips will have a little room. If they’re wrong, send them back.
“Can I drive in them?”
Yes. The palm grips the wheel instead of sliding, and the fingers are slim enough for the indicator and the radio.
“Are they thick?”
No, and that’s the point. You don’t need bulk when the wind can’t get in and the cuff is closed. You need to be able to use your hands.

Good to know: Close the zip after the glove is on, not before. Hand wash cool, close the zip first, and let them air dry away from the radiator. The touchscreen tips work on most phones and tablets.

A note from the Addlewell Lane floor:
Royston Coombes has made winter gloves on the top floor of the old glove works on Addlewell Lane in Yeovil since 1983 — the same floor his grandfather took in 1952. The building has been sold and is being turned into luxury flats, and Royston has to be out by 30 November. His hands are not up to starting over somewhere new. These 3,700 pairs are the last ones he will ever make. After 30 November they are posted from his daughter Kerry’s garage until the shelf is empty.
When they’re gone, they’re gone.

What Royston’s customers are saying
Bought the pink ones for the morning walk down the lane and they’re lovely. I was worried the colour would be garish in real life but it’s just as it looks in the photos. Warm without being bulky, and the zip at the wrist stops the cold creeping up my sleeve.

Scraping the car on a frosty morning used to leave my fingers numb before I’d even set off. Not any more. They’re thin enough to drive in and I can still use my phone with them on.

Pauline H., Weston-super-Mare
Out across the fields with the Labrador every morning whatever the weather. The palm grips the lead even when it’s wet and muddy, and the wind just doesn’t get through. Three weeks in and they still look new.

Arrived wrapped in tissue with a little handwritten card tucked in, which was a lovely touch. The fabric feels proper and well made, nothing like the flimsy ones off the market. Bought the pink for myself and I’m already eyeing up the blue.

Hilary J., Bridport
The little clip on the cuff is brilliant. They hang off my coat zip in the hall so I’m not hunting for them every morning. They fit my husband’s big hands and mine, which I didn’t expect from one size.

Valerie P., Bath
Cleared the car and the garden gate after a hard frost and my hands stayed warm and dry. I was sure touchscreen gloves would be flimsy. They’re not, the stitching is spot on and the blue is a proper bright blue.
