Thelma's Handmade Scented Candle Advent Calendar
Poured by Hand in a Vermont Farmhouse Kitchen
Thelma Penfield, 68, Barnard, Vermont. 31 winters of candle calendars — and the last 186 she will ever make.
“Anybody can make one nice candle. Making 24 that each smell like a different piece of December, that took me most of my life.”
— Thelma Penfield, candle maker since 1995
What’s in the box
What makes Thelma’s calendar different
Every candle has its own scent and its own wax color. From peppermint to balsam fir, every evening smells a little different.
Santa, the snowman, the reindeer, the fireplace. Every picture comes from the 24 watercolors Thelma painted in 1995.
A small, heavy jar of clear glass. You see the wax color and the flame, and the flame stays inside the jar.
A red box with a snowy village on the lid and 24 compartments. Candles are mixed on purpose — nobody knows what’s behind tomorrow’s door.
Just under two inches tall. Light one at the table and it keeps the family together for the evening.
The fireplace candle smells like a warm room on Christmas Eve. That one scent took Thelma eleven years to get right.
“Families who share a small, fixed ritual at the table eat together more often and talk more while they do. It doesn’t need to be big. A candle that a child gets to light is enough of a reason to sit down and stay. What Thelma built is exactly that kind of ritual — simple enough that it lasts for decades.”

The Last Calendars
The Last Calendars
A note from the kitchen:
In 1995 Thelma Penfield put 24 little test candles, each with a different scent, into a shoebox and set it on her table at a small Christmas market near Woodstock. It took her years to get all 24 scents right, and every recipe lives in one spiral notebook. For 31 winters she has poured every calendar by hand at her stove in Barnard, Vermont — more than 3,100 of them. This February, arthritis in both wrists took the pouring pitcher out of her hands. Only 186 calendars are left. When they are gone, there will be no more.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Thelma melts the wax on her kitchen stove and pours every candle by hand at exactly 135 degrees, the wick held straight by a wooden clothespin. After two days of cooling she presses on the label — a print of one of the 24 watercolors she painted in 1995 — and fills the box behind its 24 little doors herself. Small differences in wax color from candle to candle are part of it.
