Treva’s Quilted Christmas Tote – the bag that comes out every December

Final collection · Sewing room closes December 19

Three layers, quilted all the way through, with a whole little Christmas scene stitched across the front. Made one at a time by Treva Engelhart in the old summer kitchen behind her farmhouse – and these are the last ones she will ever sew.

“Fill it with presents and carry it proudly.” – Treva

“I wanted a bag that did more than carry things. I wanted one that made people happy the second they picked it up.”

– Treva Engelhart (66), quilter in Frankenmuth, Michigan, since 1974

What arrives at your door

1 Quilted Christmas Tote

In the design you choose – cardinal, Santa, snowman, Christmas village, winter pines, snowman family or dachshund.

Two padded handles

Quilted handles sewn in with a box-and-cross stitch, long enough to carry by hand or over the forearm.

A roomy, lined interior

Flat bottom and side gusset, so the tote stands on its own – about 15¾ in wide and 16.9 in tall to the top of the handles.

90-day returns

If it doesn’t win you over, send it back within 90 days and get your money back.

Made by hand in Frankenmuth

Treva Engelhart learned to sew at fourteen, making plain cotton bags with her mother for the church Christmas bazaar. Fifty-two years and more than 18,000 bags later, she still sits down every morning at the 1981 Pfaff her mother gave her as a wedding present – in the little summer kitchen behind her house on the edge of Frankenmuth, Michigan.

The Christmas Tote is the bag people kept coming back for. Women mailed her photos of it at the airport, on church pews and under Christmas trees from Arizona to Maine. Her grandson Tanner nicknamed them “Grandma’s sleigh bags,” because every Christmas Eve he watched her load the car with them, full of presents for the whole family.

This winter, Treva is closing her sewing room. Her right thumb locks up after a few hours at the machine, and there is no one to take over. About 640 finished totes remain from her final run. Her grandkids Addison and Tanner are selling them here – and when they are gone, there will be no more.

Six things a printed look-alike doesn’t have

No. 01

Three real layers

Outer fabric, a soft layer of batting and an inner lining – quilted together, not glued or laminated.

No. 02

Stitched all the way through

Every quilting line goes through all three layers, so the bag stands up on its own and keeps its shape packed full.

No. 03

A picture you can feel

Every line of the scene is traced with stitches, so Santa’s beard and the snowman’s scarf rise up off the fabric.

No. 04

Handles sewn in twice

A box-and-cross stitch where the handles meet the bag – exactly where cheap totes tear first.

No. 05

Room for Christmas

Wrapped presents, a casserole dish, two cookie tins or a laptop and a book – with space to spare.

No. 06

Made one at a time

Cut, layered, quilted and checked by Treva herself. No two come out exactly alike.

Treva’s tote vs. a printed look-alike

Choose your Christmas design

CardinalA red cardinal on a snowy branch with frosted evergreens and winterberries, in ivory and silver-grey.
SantaA jolly Santa beside a decorated tree, with poinsettias, presents and red quilted sides.
SnowmanA top-hatted snowman in a red scarf, a little tree and wrapped presents on cream quilting.
Christmas VillageA tall tree in the square, a red-brick church, lit windows and a lamppost with a bow.
Winter PinesSnowy firs across grey, cream and deep-green patchwork panels with a pinecone border.
Snowman FamilyThree cheerful snowmen in knitted hats with a log cabin, in icy blue and white.
DachshundA leaping dachshund in a Nordic scarf, framed by holly panels and a poinsettia border.

The Christmas Tote in three steps

1

Fill it

Presents, cookie tins, the potluck dish – the flat bottom keeps everything upright.

2

Carry it

By hand or over your arm on the padded handles, to church, the market or Grandma’s door.

3

Keep it out

Hang it by the door. Most customers use it far beyond December.

What a quilter sees in it

MF

“Turn a bag inside out and you learn everything. On Treva’s totes the stitching goes through every layer and the batting is even from corner to corner – that’s what keeps a quilted bag from sagging. Printed ‘quilted’ bags fail the moment you run a finger over them. This is the real thing.”

Marjorie Fenwick, quilt appraiser and guild instructor, Saginaw, Michigan

Quality you can check yourself

  • The fingertip test: stroke your fingertips across the front – you should feel soft padding under raised quilting, not a flat sheet.
  • The stitch test: run your fingertips over the picture – the lines are real thread and slightly raised.
  • The stand test: set it down with something inside – it stays upright instead of folding over.
  • The handle test: look where the handles meet the bag – a box-and-cross stitch holds each one.
  • The inside test: turn it inside out – a full lining covers the batting, no loose fluff.

Treva’s 90-day money-back guarantee

“These bags should only go home with people who’ll really love carrying them.” Take your Christmas Tote home, fill it, carry it to church and to Grandma’s. If you don’t love it, send it back within 90 days and get your money back. No questions asked.

A note on care and size

Each tote is quilted by hand, so the stitching and the placement of the picture can vary slightly from bag to bag – that is part of what makes it yours. To keep it looking its best, spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap and let it air dry. Measurements are approximate and taken flat: about 15¾ inches wide and 16.9 inches tall to the top of the handles.

The Last Run

Some things are made by one pair of hands, for decades, and then never again.

The Final Series is the last work of craftspeople who are putting down their tools. No factory, no successor, no second batch.

Just the final pieces from their workshops, each one shaped by a lifetime of getting it right.

When they're gone, they're gone.

What people say about Treva's Christmas Totes

Customer photo of a quilted Christmas tote

I was half expecting one of those flat printed bags you see everywhere this time of year. This is the real deal. It's thick and soft, the stitching on Santa's beard actually stands up off the fabric, and the colors are exactly like the pictures. My husband says it's too nice to put cookies in. I disagree.

Customer photo of a quilted Christmas tote

Bought the snowman family one for hauling stuff to my in-laws on Christmas Eve. Two kids, a lot of presents, zero patience. It holds way more than I expected and the handles are padded so it doesn't dig into your arm. Honestly the cutest thing in my house right now.

Of course I had to get the dachshund. Mine is called Pretzel and she sat there staring at it like it was her sister. The quilting is beautiful and you can tell it was made by hand, the little scarf on the dog is all stitched. Shipping was faster than I thought it would be.

Packed it with gifts for my sister's and it rode in the back of the car without tipping over once. It stands up on its own, which my old tote never did. Worth the price for that alone.

I take a cookie tin and a casserole to three different get togethers every December and I needed something sturdy. This is it. Flat bottom, holds its shape when it's full, and it still looks nice enough to carry into church. I spot cleaned a little gravy off already and it came right out.

Customer photo of a quilted Christmas tote

It sits by the front door now and I grab it every time I go out. I was a bit worried about the size from the photos but it's perfect, big enough for a couple of wrapped presents and not bulky. Lovely to know a real woman sewed it.
