Vada's Woven Bird House
Tied by Hand on the Jacks Fork, Shannon County, Missouri
Vada Honeycutt, seventy-six. Sixty-five years at her father's 1931 broom winder, and fifteen winters writing down which bed a wren will take. Her daddy cured his brooms on the porch. Vada found out who was sleeping in them.
238 left · last harvest · no restockThey don't freeze. They run out. A little bird burns through what she's got a little faster than she can put it back, unless she's got a bed out of the wind.

What arrives at your door
Why one gets slept in, and a "hummingbird house" hangs empty all winter
Broomcorn tied the way a broom is tied: tight at the collar, flared at the skirt, laid in overlapping tiers on a round white-oak plate that overhangs the room. Rain runs down the straw and drips off the edge, never into the doorway. The plate was Doyle's fix, not mine.
A 1.6-inch entrance tucked right up under the plate, out of the rain. Big enough for a wren, a chickadee, a titmouse or a nuthatch. Every bit of door you leave off is warmth that stays inside. Folks think a bigger door's friendlier. It's just colder.
No corners for cold air to sit in, and sized for a huddle. Small birds survive the hardest nights by packing in together and sharing heat. They don't want a ballroom. They want to be packed in like biscuits in a skillet.
Grass braided and coiled tight enough to stop the wind, loose enough to let the damp from their breath escape, so the room doesn't frost over on the inside by morning. Plastic sweats. Pine boards sweat. Grass breathes.
A small bird choosing a bed at dusk will not commit to something that moves. Every nest ships with twine to tie its body fast against a branch, a trunk or a porch post. Daddy's rule for curing brooms: never let one swing. Turns out it's the wrens' rule too.
Broomcorn from the river bottom where her father first planted it in 1958, tied at a 1931 foot winder, on plates her late husband turned. Not a factory, not a production line. When the shelves in the broom shed are clear, there is no second cut.
“People picture the little birds that stay all winter fluffed up on a bare branch, riding out the night. They don't, not if they can help it. Wrens, chickadees, titmice and nuthatches roost in cavities: old woodpecker holes, gaps in barn siding, dense cedars, brush piles. A sheltered roost can cut what a small bird burns overnight by more than a third, and on the coldest nights they pack in together to share heat. In England a single nest box was once found with sixty-one wrens inside it. The trouble is that almost every one of those places is temporary. The dead tree comes down, the brush pile goes to the curb, the old barn falls in. Since 1970, North America has lost close to three billion birds. A well-made roost helps, but only if three things are right: a roof that keeps rain off the door, a body that holds still in the wind, and a room small enough to stay warm with a handful of birds inside. Get those right and you've given them somewhere that's still there in March.”

Perfect for
Quality you can check yourself
- A real broom-straw roof on a wooden plate: turn it over and look. The plate overhangs the room all the way around, so the water drips off the edge, not into the door.
- The door sits right under the plate: 1.6 inches, sheltered from above. No open crown for rain to soak in from the top.
- Natural straw and braided grass: no plastic liner, no paint, no stain, nothing to sweat or off-gas in a room they sleep in for five months.
- Tie-down twine in the box: because a bed that swings is a bed nobody sleeps in, and almost nobody includes it.
- Last harvest, tied by hand: every nest tied by Vada herself in Shannon County. Once the shelves are clear, there is no restock and no successor.
WinterPromise
Vada's Whole-Winter Promise
Winter doesn't run on a schedule, so this promise doesn't either. Tie it up, give it the winter. If you're not completely happy with the nest itself (the straw, the roof, how it holds up to the weather), send it back for a full refund. No deadline, no conditions, no forms. One email is all it takes, and US shipping is free.
Every nest is tied by hand from natural straw and grass, so color, shape and the odd loose strand vary from one to the next. That's the mark of real handwork, not a fault. And the birds are wild. Hung the right way (in cover, out of the north wind, tied down tight, near a window you look out of at dusk) a nest is often found within the first few cold snaps, but the timing belongs to the birds, not to us. Three free things matter more than anything else: leave the lower limbs on your cedars and hollies, leave one untidy corner with a brush pile, and hang it early, before the first hard freeze. Fall is the best time of the whole year to put one up. Don't stuff it with cotton or dryer lint; they bring their own. Once the cold sets in, leave it be until late March, then give it a gentle shake-out.

Message from the Artist:
After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.
We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.
When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

What Vada's customers are saying
I'll admit I almost skipped this because I figured it'd be one of those flimsy battery lights that looks nothing like the pictures. It's actually heavier and better built than I expected, sits rock solid on my shelf and doesn't budge even when my cat brushes past it. The light is warm and soft, not that cold white glow you get with a lot of cheap LEDs. Showed up in about 6 days and the box was packed really well.

Wasn't sure if this would actually throw enough light to notice or if it'd just be a cute decoration that does nothing. Turns out it gives off a really nice warm glow in the evenings, enough to notice from across the room without being harsh. Arrived quicker than I thought, maybe 5 days, and it was wrapped up really carefully so nothing got scratched.

I've bought a few of these battery lantern type decor pieces before and most of them feel cheap once you hold them. This one has actual weight to the metal and the finish looks like real wrought iron, not painted plastic. Setup was just standing it up between my books, took two minutes total. Only wish I'd ordered a second one for the other end of the shelf from the start.

At 67 I don't have patience for anything complicated so this was a relief, no wiring no drilling, it just stands there like a bookend and lights up on its own timer. Battery has held up well, I'm going on two months now without swapping it out. My daughter saw it on a video call and asked me to send her the link before we'd even hung up.

My wife picked this out and I was skeptical it would just end up being clutter but it's grown on me fast. No cords, no outlets to hide, you just set it on the shelf and it runs off the battery for weeks at a time. The ironwork looks a lot more detailed in person than I expected from the photos. Would've ordered sooner if I knew it was this easy to set up.

Bought this for my reading nook and honestly wasn't expecting much given the price, figured it'd look cheap up close. It's actually really charming in person, the little lantern glow is soft and warm and not annoying at night like some LED stuff can be. Shipping was smooth, tracking updated the whole way and it got here in under a week.
