Velta’s Hand-Knit Slipper Socks
Knit by Hand in Biddeford, Maine
Velta Ozols, 66, has knit slipper socks on the top floor of the old Hollis Mill since 1985, in the two-yarn method her grandmother brought from Latvia in 1929. The mill has been sold to a developer. These 609 pairs are the last ones she will ever make.
A foot doesn’t stay warm because of fuzz. It stays warm because of the air you trap. That’s the whole secret, and it takes twice the time.

What arrives at your door
What makes them different
Every row is knit with two strands at once. The result is a double layer with warm air trapped in between.
A soft, fleece-like lining in the cuff and the foot, so nothing cold touches your skin.
Silicone dots on the bottom for hardwood, tile and stairs. No more sliding across the kitchen.
Diamond cables on top add another layer of yarn exactly where the cold comes through.
The lined cuff holds at the ankle, so they don’t slip off when you put your feet up.
She knits the star band, turns the heels and checks every pair herself before it is boxed.

“Stranded knitting is one of the oldest ways to make a garment warmer without making it heavier. The yarn that isn’t being used travels along the back of the work, so you get a second layer and still air between the two. That’s why traditional winter mittens and socks from the Baltic and Scandinavia were knit this way. It is also roughly twice the work, which is why you almost never see it in mass-produced slippers.”

Velta’s checklist
- Knit by hand: star band, heels and toes by Velta herself.
- Double layer: two yarns in every row, warm air in between.
- Plush lining: soft against the skin, cuff to toes.
- Grip-dot soles: safe on hardwood, tile and stairs.
- Wool blend: warm and springy, without the itch.
- Checked: every pair pulled on and inspected before it is boxed.
90-Day “Warm Feet or Your Money Back” Guarantee
Wear them all winter. If they don’t keep your feet warm, or you simply don’t love them, send us a short email within 90 days and you get your money back.
Good to know: The knit stretches, so if you are between two sizes, pick the larger one for a roomier fit or the smaller one for a snug fit. Every pair is knit by hand, so the star band can vary a little from pair to pair. For care, we recommend a gentle cold hand wash and drying flat, away from the radiator.

A note from the Hollis Mill:
Velta Ozols has knit slipper socks on the top floor of the old Hollis Mill in Biddeford, Maine since 1985, in the two-yarn method her grandmother brought from Latvia in 1929. The mill has been sold and is being turned into loft apartments, and Velta has to be out by November 30. Her hands are not up to starting over somewhere new. These 609 pairs are the last ones she and her knitters will ever make. After November 30 they ship from her daughter Kristine’s garage until the shelf is empty.

Just unpacked mine and I could tell right away these are the real thing. Thick, soft, and the knit is so even. The sherpa inside feels like a hug for your feet. Minnesota winter, I am ready.

My husband laughs that I only take these off to shower. Warmest thing I own. They stay on when I put my feet up and the grip dots are great on our wood floors.

Bought them for the cabin. The floor is ice cold by morning even with the stove going. These keep my feet warm all evening. My wife says I look ridiculous. I don’t care.

Evenings on the couch with a book and these on. Even my old retriever keeps sniffing them. Soft, warm, and they don’t slide off when I kick my feet up.

First thing I put on in the morning, before the coffee. Our farmhouse floors are freezing until the stove catches. Ordered the L for my size 10 feet, perfect fit.

I was worried about slipping on our old painted stairs in socks. The little grip dots really work. And they are so warm I ordered a second pair for my mom.
