Made by Hand, From the Glass to the Dragonfly
Fifty years at a furnace teaches a man things a factory line never will. Vernon blows the glass, forges the iron and shapes the ornaments himself — every piece of it. The sealed thermometer dial is the one component he buys in, and he tells you so plainly rather than letting you find out.
Gathered on the pipe and shaped by hand, one tube at a time, then left in the annealer overnight so the stress comes out of the glass. Skipping that step is what makes cheap glass split at the first hard freeze. Vernon has never skipped it.
Bar stock heated in the forge, bent, hammered and drawn out to a point for the stake. The scroll under the songbird is curled by eye rather than around a jig — the mark of someone who has done it long enough not to need one.
The dragonfly’s blues and greens are not paint. They are temper colours — the shades steel passes through as it heats. Vernon draws each wing out at the exact moment it turns. Judging that by eye takes years, and no two come out the same.
A moulded plastic tube yellows in sunlight and clouds from the inside — by its third summer you are squinting at a number you cannot really see. Properly annealed glass does none of that. It is the same tube in a decade.
