Wal's Handmade Bronze Bird Bath
Cast in solid bronze in an old bluestone stable in Gawler, South Australia
Wal Haddon, 73, poured iron in a Gawler foundry for 37 years. Now he casts one thing: a bronze bird bath, so backyard birds have water through the summer heat. Thirty-seven years of foundry sand have reached his lungs, and his doctor has said no more. These are his last 53.
“The day Adelaide hit 46.6, the old magpie was standing in my bird bath at seven in the morning with his beak open. I’d put out seed for him for years. He didn’t want it. He wanted the water.”
Wal Haddon · Gawler, South Australia

What makes Wal’s bird bath special
Each figure comes out of one pour of solid bronze. No hollow resin that goes brittle in the Australian sun.
No paint, no chemicals. Every piece stands outside through one South Australian winter until the soft green grows on its own.
Shallow on purpose, so fairy-wrens, silvereyes and honeyeaters can drink and bathe safely.
Overlapping leaves guide rain straight into the bowl. When a summer storm breaks, it tops itself up.
Solid, heavy metal that won’t fade, crack or blow over. It looks better every year it stands outside.
Wal files every leaf edge himself. No two figures are exactly alike.
“Most people think about feeding backyard birds and forget about water. On a 40-degree day, a small bird has to drink just to stay cool. A shallow, clean bowl near some shrubs does more for fairy-wrens and honeyeaters than another feeder ever will.”
Dr. Fiona Kerrigan · Urban-bird ecologist · Adelaide Hills bird-survey volunteer
Perfect for
Why Wal’s bird bath lasts
- Solid cast metal. Heavy and stable, it won’t blow over or crack.
- Natural patina. The green finish deepens with every season outside.
- Shallow, safe water. Never deep enough to be a danger to small birds.
- Easy to clean. Tip out, brush, refill. Done in a minute.
- Checked one by one. Every figure is inspected in Wal’s workshop before it leaves.
If Wal’s bird bath doesn’t win you over, one email to info@cedarandtinco.com is enough. He would rather have it back than see it sit in a shed.
Tip from Wal: Stand it on level ground in part shade, near a shrub, so small birds have cover close by. Change the water every day or two, and on a hot day top it up morning and afternoon.

The Last Winter
The Last Winter
A note from the workshop:
Wal Haddon poured iron in a foundry in Gawler, South Australia, for 37 years. On the 24th of January 2019, the day Adelaide hit 46.6 degrees, he found an old magpie standing in his bird bath with its beak open, ignoring the seed beside it. It wasn’t hungry. It was thirsty. So he cast a seated girl whose leafy dress becomes a shallow bowl, and let each one weather to green through a South Australian winter. Summer starts on the 1st of December, and birds learn where the water is, so Wal says the time to put a bowl out is now, before the first heatwave. But 37 years of foundry sand have reached his lungs, and his doctor has told him: no more sand. 53 figures from his final pour are left in his bluestone workshop. When they are gone, the furnace goes out for good.

What people say about Wal's bronze bird baths
I put it under the lemon tree in October. The magpies found it the next morning, and now there are two at the bowl most days.

On a 40-degree day I top it up twice. The fairy-wrens splashing about in it is the best part of my afternoon.

David R., Toowoomba
My mum has it on her little patio among the geraniums. She watches the rosellas with her morning tea and calls it her little lady.

Linda P., Geelong
Heavier and finer than the photos suggest. Under our big gum tree it looks like it has always been there.

Roger G., Mildura
It fills itself up when a storm comes through, and the honeyeaters are straight back as soon as the rain stops.

Susan M., Mount Barker
Our old bird bath was too deep and the little ones never used it. This one has silvereyes in it every morning now.

Arrived beautifully packed. It was in the garden bed within ten minutes, and I ordered a second one for my sister in Perth.

Wal packs each mould with sand by hand and pours the metal in a single pour, so the figure is one solid piece with no glued seams. He files every leaf edge himself. Then each figure stands outside through one South Australian winter, and rain and frost grow the soft green patina on their own, with no paint or chemicals. Every piece is checked in his workshop before it leaves. Small differences from figure to figure are part of the charm.
