Wilma's Stay-Hot Pumpkin Soup Bowl
Made at the Wheel in Germantown, New York
Wilma Hagedorn, 73, has made one pumpkin bowl for every chair at her Thanksgiving table since 1982. Arthritis in both thumbs ended her time at the wheel this fall. These 212 bowls are the last she will ever make.
“A bowl on a shelf is just a dust catcher. I want mine on a table, with hot soup in them and people around them.”
– Wilma Hagedorn, making pumpkin bowls since 1982What’s in the box
What 44 Thanksgivings taught Wilma
The lid sits snug on the bowl and keeps the steam in. The soup is still hot when grace is over.
14 ounces — one good serving of soup or chili. “Nobody should fill up on soup before the turkey.”
Pressed ribs and two small handles give your fingers something to hold. Easy for small hands and stiff ones.
Lift the lid by the green stem, never by the hot rim. Then comes the smell of the soup.
A smooth, glossy glaze all over. Soup and chili wipe right off with warm soapy water.
Oatmeal, chili, mac and cheese, ice cream. Wilma’s granddaughter eats breakfast out of hers all year.
“A covered bowl does two things at a holiday table. It keeps the food warm while everyone sits down, and it gives the meal a moment — everybody lifts the lid at once. A small, single-serving size is also how soup was traditionally served as a first course: enough to warm you up, not enough to spoil the main meal.”
– Dr. Miriam Castellano, Food Historian, Poughkeepsie, New YorkPerfect for
Wilma’s checklist
- Real ceramic: heavy, solid and glazed all over, not thin plastic.
- Snug lid: keeps the soup warm on the way to the table.
- One serving: 14 ounces, the right size for a first course.
- Two handles: easy to carry, even for little hands.
- Easy to clean: the smooth glaze wipes right off.
30-Day “Lift the Lid” Guarantee
If your bowl isn’t right for your table, send us a short email within 30 days and you get your money back.
Good to know: This is a single-serving bowl, about the size of a large mug — it is not a serving tureen. Each bowl is glazed by hand, so the orange and the curve of the stem vary a little from bowl to bowl. Hand washing is recommended to keep the glaze bright.

The Last Thanksgiving Batch
The Last Thanksgiving Batch
A note from the barn studio:
Wilma Hagedorn has made pumpkin soup bowls in the old milk room of an 1890 dairy barn in Germantown, New York, since 1982 — about 4,600 of them. It started with a promise to her grandmother Ilse, whose real pumpkin gave way on the Thanksgiving table in 1980. Wilma still presses the eight ribs into every bowl with the handle of Ilse’s old soup spoon. Arthritis in both thumbs means she can no longer center the clay on her wheel, so there will be no further run — the last 212 bowls are all there is, and when those are gone there are no more.

What people say about Wilma’s pumpkin bowls
I bought six for Thanksgiving. When everyone lifted the lids at the same time, my 90-year-old father actually clapped.

Deborah M., Saratoga Springs, NY
Smaller than a cereal bowl, and that is exactly right. A cup and a half of soup, and everyone still had room for the turkey.

Susan T., Stamford, CT
Arrived wrapped like it was going to the moon. Not a single chip. That deep orange is even prettier in person.

Karen B., Allentown, PA
Good heavy ceramic, not that thin stuff. The little handles make it easy to carry, even with my arthritis.

Joan W., Poughkeepsie, NY
Now my grandkids only eat their mac and cheese if it comes out of the pumpkin. I went back for two more.

Nancy R., Morristown, NJ
My grandmother served soup in a real pumpkin too. This one is on our table every Sunday now, not just in November.

Ellen F., Burlington, VT
I bought one just for me. Oatmeal every morning out of a little pumpkin, and the lid keeps it warm while I pour my coffee.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Wilma throws each bowl on her wheel, trims it, and presses the eight ribs in by hand with the handle of her grandmother’s old soup spoon. The lid is fitted to its own bowl and the green stem is rolled by hand. Then every bowl is glazed and fired twice in her barn studio in Germantown, New York. No two are identical.
